Army Knowledge Online, referred to as AKO, is the official US military worldwide intranet portal used for connecting soldiers and DA civilians through AKO webmail. AKO webmail is said to be the world’s largest corporate intranet and serves over 2 million registered users including currently active personel, retired army members, and army family members. According to the website, AKO is the “Pivotal Tool” used in “Transforming the Army to a knowledge-based organization”. The mission of AKO is very specific; transform the us army into the current technology age by connecting military members on the internet through applications like AKO webmail.
Army Knowledge Online was developed in 2004 because soldiers supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom voiced their concerns and wanted to securely communicate with their friends and family. AKO users can receive and send e-mails and have access to all standard webmail features.

AKO webmail provides a secure method to communicate sensitive information through the internet for its users using a high level of encryption. AKO provides email, file storage, allows for chat, blogs, and various location services. One of AKO’s biggest assets is its ability to link all the AKO users  together to provide information on medical, publications, army regulations, as well as a free anti-virus products.  AKO webmail provides a way for America’s Army at War, including  army personel in places like Iraq, to communicate with each other and their family. Once enlisted, all active military soldiers are required to register for an AKO and AKO Webmail account.

Although AKO is a very useful website, there are a lot of people who say that it is not very user friendly. Although AKO Webmail’s features may take some time to learn, once you do get a hang of the features, you will find that it is an excellent portal for tons of very useful services that you will be required to learn and know about throughout your military career.
Only those who are part of the military can register for an AKO webmail account. This includes currently active army personel and army reserves, national guards, as well as retired army members and the guests of all personnel of the army.
